Old Press Kits Become Valuable Collectibles

I stumbled across an interesting article from Classical Drive:

merc kit_maclellan.jpgLook closely at the cars in this photo and you might think you're seeing an article on Mercedes' racing activities in the 1950's. Not so. This is a page from a 1991 Mercedes press kit. Now quite desirable as a collectible, it's available from McLellans Automotive History along with a variety of other maker's press kits. I'm all too familiar with these things, having once been on the side of the creators and many times on the side of those who receive. I still am one of the latter although as Robert McLellan points out in his weekly newsletter, today's kits usually consist of nothing more than a CD, whereas in earlier times they were quite fancy and included all sorts of goodies aimed at enticing the motoring press. Indeed, I have a few kits and other pieces of some rarity, offered with concept cars and high-end luxury models at auto show press days, and even a "book" given to auto writers at the introduction of the Alfa Romeo Guilia Sprint 1600 and another from the launch of the Fiat 128. Until now I never realised these things had value; perhaps I'll offer them for sale as my condo's too small for collecting more than dust. But I digress: it's worth a few moments of your valuable time to view this edition of McLellan's weekly Automotive Chronicles.
